The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is responsible for Australia’s official development assistance as well as for trade and investment promotion.

DFAT has a strong and overarching focus on aid for trade, particularly on investments related to private sector development, infrastructure and trade facilitation. In addition, DFAT’s priority areas include:

  • Agriculture, fisheries and water;
  • Effective governance: policies, institutions and functioning economies;
  • Education and health;
  • Building resilience: humanitarian assistance, disaster risk reduction and social protection; and
