IOM is the leading inter-governmental organisation focusing on migration issues and works to ensure humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, assist in the search for practical solutions to migrations problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants (refugees and internally displaced people) in need. It works in four areas of migration management: migration and development, facilitating migration, regulating migration and forced migration. IOM also works with cross-cutting issues such as promoting international migration law, migration health, the gender dimension of migration, protection of migrants’ right and shaping the policy debate.
IOM currently has 157 member countries and an additional 10 states as observers.
